VOLUNTEERING

Nature Reserve Working Parties

The Worcestershire Wildlife Trust has 80+ reserves in the county which they wouldn’t be able to manage properly without the help of their large body of dedicated volunteers. A major part of this body of volunteers are the men and women who belong to the work parties who help manage the reserves. The Malvern Group volunteer at various local reserves including the Knapp & Papermill and Blackhouse Wood. The Knapp parties also occasionally work elsewhere when needed.

The Knapp & Papermill work parties meet every Thursday morning, throughout the year, from 9.30am until about 1.00pm with a coffee break at 11.00.

Blackhouse Wood work parties meet on the 3rd Sunday of the month from September till May, starting at 10.00am until about 3-4.00pm with breaks for coffee and lunch.

Work is varied. Apart from the regular tasks including bramble and bracken clearance, keeping pathways clear and ‘bashing’ the dreaded Himalayan Balsam, we also help with more special projects. These can include coppicing, hedge laying, orchard management and habitat creation.

These work parties are also social occasions of dedicated like-minded people. What better way to get some exercise than in a ‘green gym’ whilst helping with the preservation of local habitats for our fast depleting flora and fauna?

If you are interested in volunteering, please register, via the web page, with the volunteer officer at Lower Smite HQ who will put you in touch with the relevant work party leader.
